Our Story
Papal Zouave International began as a Twitter page in early 2022 under the name Papal Zouave History. Before long, it became clear that there was a need for an organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the history and memory of the Papal Zouaves.
After a year and a half of work, Papal Zouave History became Papal Zouave International (P.Z.I.) on December 8, 2023, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.
Today, P.Z.I. is dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of the Papal Zouaves, while also highlighting other Catholic and counter-revolutionary soldiers and movements, including the Vendéans, Carlists, and Cristeros.
Who Were the Papal Zouaves?
The Papal Zouaves were a multinational corps of Catholic volunteers who came from across Christendom to defend the Papal States and Blessed Pope Pius IX against the forces seeking to overthrow the temporal power of the Pope and incorporate Rome into a unified Italy.
From 1860 to 1870, they fought in defense of the Papal States during the Italian unification movement, known as the Risorgimento. To the Zouaves, their cause was more than political: they regarded their service to the Pope and the Church as the 9th Crusade.
Why is “International” in the organization name?
The Papal Zouaves were truly international. Volunteers came from across the world, including the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Canada, Spain, the United States, Latin America, and many other countries.
Papal Zouave International seeks to preserve the history of all these men, rather than focusing on any single nationality. By publishing primarily in English—the modern lingua franca—we hope to make their remarkable story accessible to people around the world.
Why is it Important to Learn about the Papal Zouaves?
Much of our rich Catholic history has faded into obscurity, including the stories of those who took up arms in defense of the Church.
The Papal Zouaves offer a remarkable example of faith, sacrifice, courage, and devotion. Their piety, chivalry, and willingness to suffer, and, for some, to die for their convictions can continue to inspire Catholics today.
By preserving their stories, we ensure that their sacrifices and the ideals for which they fought are not forgotten.
What does Papal Zouave International do?
P.Z.I. works to research, preserve, and share the history of the Papal Zouaves with a modern audience. We publish regular historical articles and social media content, produce podcasts and videos, and republish rare and out-of-print works relating to the Papal Zouaves and the defense of the Papal States.
